FCC Chair Julius Genachowski’s biggest news was the proposal to move to one-sided and two-sided auctions to deal with the coming spectrum squeeze. The two-sided auction model, which he said has been lauded by quite a few groups, would put the FCC in the role of reselling taken but not wanted spectrum for current license holders through auctions.
Genachowski did advocate for maintaining some open spectrum which, in the past, has spawned such innovations as garage door openers, baby monitors, and then computer networks.
About mobile broadband, Julius Genachowski commented, ”we can’t do it without utility poles … pole attachments.” “We need to get a lot more towers out there. We are taking policies on public rights of way to the next level.”
A private sector panel that spoke after Genachowski at the Bisnow had several interesting insights:
- Video is the media driver today
- Mobile broadband adoption is a combination of applications, availability, and price. The carrier consolidation is not helping adoption, especially in rural markets.
- More people are communicating using text messaging than any other form, except spoken (knowing the teen to twenty demographic, I think their texting might be more than their verbal communication!)
- Mobile broadband, still in its infancy, will be one of, if not the most, critical platforms for society in the near future.
Always good to keep an ear to the ground when it comes to most crucial platforms for society!
